Election Cash

The Election Cash iOS app retrieves and displays public data on money in federal elections and makes the results of certain searches available to the user in CSV format via email. This app can retrieve financial data for federal campaigns for President, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The source of the data for this app is the openFEC API project of the Federal Election Commission (with which this app is *not* affiliated). The data presented by this app is only as complete, as accurate and as up to date as the data made available by the openFEC project.

  • A user may search for candidates, election committees or contributors to election committees. Search results are displayed in the app, and the results of several types of searches can be emailed to the user in CSV format, along with the criteria used to perform the search
  • A user may search for a candidate by name, candidate ID, state, office sought, political party or election cycle.
  • A user may search for a committee by committee name, committee ID, associated candidate IDs ( if any), party, election cycle, designation (e.g., principal campaign committee of a candidate), associated organization type (e.g., labor organization) or committee type (e.g., so-called “Super PACs”)
  • A user may search for a contributor by name, state, minimum amount of donation or committee ID

There are three “paths” through the information screens in the app (see the “App Instructions Menu”)

  • PATH 1  – If one clicks on the magnifying glass at the top right hand corner of the  first screen, one can follow the path Candidate Search Screen->Candididate Screen (including associated Committees)-> Committee Screen ( for a chosen candidate)->Contributor Search Screen (to search for donors to the aforementioned Committee of the chosen candidate)
  • PATH 2  – If one clicks on the word  Committees at the bottom of the first screen, one can follow the path Committee Search Screen  -> Committee Screen> Contributor Search Screen  (to search for donors to the aforementioned Committee)
  • PATH 3 If one clicks on the word  Contributors at the bottom of the first screen, one can follow the path consisting only of Contributor Search. Using this path, one can search, say, for all contributors in a particular state who contributed $1,000,000 or more to any committee.
